Cyclone approaching Gujarat coast

CASA, ACT implementing member in India, is warning of a cyclonic storm over central Arabian Sea rapidly moving towards the south of Gujarat Coast.

At 13:00 local time, the Indian Meteorological department reported that the storm was some 500 km south of the coast of Gujarat, moving towards the areas still highly vulnerable from the recent earthquake.

According to the latest release by local authorities, the army had been placed on alert, while some of the local population has been moved away to lower risk areas. All major ports are closed.

A cyclone alert has been also declared in Pakistan.

ACT members in India are on a stand-by and ready to move into the area at a short notice. They are closely monitoring the situation and providing the first-hand information. Initial contingency planning is being done with emphasis on food, drinking water and temporary shelter.
