ACT member CASA in India, is responding to needs in the areas affected
by Friday's earthquake in Gujarat. CASA aims to assist about 35.000
people with food, shelter, water, blankets, clothes and other basic
relief items.
Mr. Sam Selwine of CASA reports from Gujarat, that the damage is
far worse than anything he has seen before and that the death toll
far exceeds earlier estimates.
Latest estimates from Indian authorities speak of more than 10.000
people killed. There are so far no reliable estimates of the number
of wounded or of the number of people rendered permanently or temporarily
homeless by the earthquake, which measured up to 7.9 on the Richter
scale with it's epicentre close to the town of Bhuj in Gujarat.
In Pakistan, Church World Service (CWS) office is assessing the needs
in eastern Pakistan and further details is expected to be available
soon.
An ACT appeal for the earthquake victims in India and Pakistan will
be issued as soon as ACT members on the ground have assessed urgent
needs and put forward a request.
