We have received information from our ACT members in Mozambique that
heavy rains associated to a tropical depression since the 24th
January have caused floods in the Zambezia province affecting 10 districts.
Out of these, Mangaja da Costa and Mopeia are said to be worse affected
as they have been cut off from the rest of the province by road and
most of the land is inundated.
The Governor of the province has reported 23,600 people displaced
and 23,000 hectares of cultivated land estimated inundated. Data for
the affected people is however not very accurate as assessments from
government and other NGOs teams are being carried out. World Food
Program has been supplying food commodities to the affected through
the use of boats. Two Air Force helicopters are being used to transport
goods and assessment teams to the isolated areas.
The priority sectors in need of immediate assistance have been indicated
as:
- Water and Sanitation
- Relief Food
- Family kits, and blankets
ACT member, The Christian Council of Mozambique is among the organizations
assigned to carry out needs assessments in the affected districts
and will keep the ACT CO. informed of the situation. Meanwhile, CCM
is collaborating with another ACT member, Lutheran World Federation-Mozambique
and depending upon the outcome of the assessments and also if the
floods increase, an ACT appeal may be forthcoming.
