Militia attacks in Nyalla Town - South Darfur leaves 31 people dead and over 3,000 families displaced

Geneva, 31 October, 2003

Information received from ACT member Norwegian Church Aid in Khartoum, Sudan indicates that, starting from 29th September, 2003 a militia group known as Janjaweed has attacked and burned 23 villages in the outskirts of Nyalla Town in South Darfur killing 30 people and displacing over 3,000 families inside Nyalla town and east of the town. The report says that the affected people are living in squalid conditions in the open without shelter and are exposed to bad weather, and are facing high incidence of disease and malnutrition. NCA partner member in the area, Sudan Social Development Agency (SUDO) who has been monitoring the situation says although they have not carried out a detailed assessment, the obvious needs of the displaced people are blankets, mosquito nets, domestic utensils and medicines. The report says the UN has an operational strategy for the North and West Darfur for the provision of food, water and sanitation, medical supplies, and non food items and medical supplies through their partners. However, NCA through SUDO and another ACT member, Sudan Council of Churches (SCC) would like to offer immediate response to the worst cases of the displaced people and have requested for a Rapid Response Fund of $50,000 for blankets, mosquito nets, domestic utensils, and medicines from the ACT Coordinating Office in Geneva.

The background information provided by the NCA sourced from a UN draft report of 23 October, 2003 indicates that, the conflicts in Darfur region between the Government and the Sudan Peoples Liberation Army (SPLA) have caused more than 500,000 internally displaced people and 70,000 refugees in Chad. Despite the efforts and progress made for a cease fire and peace agreements between the government and the SPLA, sponsored militias continue to cause havoc for the people in many areas of South Sudan.
