Typhoon Ketsana

Since 8 September 2009, heavy rains have caused flooding in 39 communes in 6 districts of Kompong Thom province. On 29 September 2009 typhoon Ketsana, on its way from the Philippines to Vietnam, lashed the northeast to northwest areas of the central provinces of Cambodia. In addition to the previous flooding, typhoon Ketsana brought more rainwater, floods and havoc to at least 3 provinces. According to the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM) of Cambodia as on 1 October 2009 there were 14 deaths in total confirmed (9 deaths in Kompong Thom, 3 deaths in Siem Reap province and 2 deaths in Rattanakiri).
In Kompong Thom Province – ACT member Church World Service (CWS) Cambodia operational area - the following casualties and damages were reported following typhoonh Ketsana: 10,684 families affected in 254 villages in 43 communes; 9 deaths (5 women and 3 children); 14,862 ha of paddy rice were completely destroyed; 34,078 meters of road cut off; 47 people were reported injured with 18 serious injuries; at least 98 houses and public buildings were completely destroyed and at least 430 houses and public buildings were destroyed (more than 60%).
Church World Service Cambodia is proposing a 12 month programme comprising: Emergency relief assistance in the form of food and non-food along with temporary shelter. Recovery and rehabilitation projects including food security and livelihood, reconstruction along with capacity building; disaster preparedness and risk reduction.
ACT members Danchurchaid (DCA) and Christian Aid (CA) joint Cambodia program have pledged financial and back-up support to CWS Cambodia. The Lutheran World Federation (LWF), another large ACT member in country, will not be involved in the intervention as their operational areas have not been affected.
