Assistance to Flood Victims in Gonaives

On 18 September 2004, Hurricane Jeanne lashed northern parts of Haiti with heavy rains causing extensive damage and flooding in urban and rural areas, particularly in the north-west in the Artibonite Provinces. Gonaives, the fourth main city in Haiti, was severely affected by flooding and mudslides which destroyed large areas of the city and its surrounding communities.

ACT members in Haiti, the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and Diakonie Emergency Aid (DEA) requested support from the ACT Alliance to respond to this emergency and an ACT appeal was issued on 5 October 2004. ACT members in Haiti are now requesting a revision of the appeal to accommodate the following changes:

• To adjust their activities to the actual funding received.

• Maintaining the focus in school rehabilitation, the activities will concentrate upon improving conditions in schools regarding water supplies, latrines and school equipment (blackboard, desks and tables). It is expected that 28 schools with about 5,600 pupils could benefit from improved conditions.

• To establish a support unit in Gonaives for implementation and supervision of the activities. At the same time LWF’s implementing partner The Association of Haitian Evangelical Leaders in Gonaives (ALEHG) will be strengthened through the assistance of a so-called project facilitator.

• To extend the period implementation of the appeal from 31 May to 31 August 2005
