Appeal Target:
US$ 4,354,372 Balance Requested
from ACT Alliance: US$ 1,050,398 A massive earthquake
of magnitude 8.0 on the Richter Scale struck Central China at 14:28
(Beijing Time) on May 12th 2008. Its impact mainly affected
the Wenchuan County of Sichuan Province, as well as other provinces
including Gansu, Qinghai, Guizhou, Ningxia, Henan, Shanxi, Sha’anxi
and Jiangsu. According
to the statistics of Ministry of Civil Affairs (as of June 2), 69,019
persons were killed in 9 provinces including Sichuan, Gansu, Sha’anxi,
Chongqing, Yunnan, Sha’anxi, Guizhou, Hubei and Hunan, another 373,573
were injured, 18,627 missed, and the total affected population has
reached 45.6 million. Public facilities including schools, hospitals,
and roads were severely damaged, particularly in the following eight
counties or cities: Wenchuan, Lixian, Beichuan, Maoxian, Dujiangyan
and Mianzhu in Sichuang Province,
Longnan City in Gansu Province as well as Hanzhong City in Shaanxi
Province. Continuous aftershocks and geologic change have been threatening
the security of the survivors, aid workers and volunteers. Local
ACT International member Amity Foundation immediately began providing
relief assistance to survivors in coordination with their local
partners with the provision of quilts, plastic sheeting, food and
drinking water. An ACT Preliminary Appeal was issued within 24 hours
of the disaster to mobilize and coordinate support to their response.
This is an elaborated and revised version of the appeal following
further assessment of current needs on the ground. Within
the eighteen-month implementation period for this appeal, Amity
plans to assist 20,000 families through distribution of mostly non-food
items, provision of psycho-social care, reconstruction of 500 houses,
2 primary schools and 5 village clinics, repair of 20 water systems,
provision of emergency preparedness training and cash grants for
the purchase of agricultural tools. Project Completion Date: 31 October 2009 (approximately 18
