A massive earthquake of magnitude 8.0 on the Richter Scale struck Central China at 14:28 (Beijing Time) on May 12th 2008. Its impact mainly affected the Wenchuan County of Sichuan Province, as well as other provinces including Gansu, Qinghai, Guizhou, Ningxia, Henan, Shanxi, Sha’anxi and Jiangsu.

According to the statistics of Ministry of Civil Affairs (as of June 2), 69,019 persons were killed in 9 provinces including Sichuan, Gansu, Sha’anxi, Chongqing, Yunnan, Sha’anxi, Guizhou, Hubei and Hunan, another 373,573 were injured, 18,627 missed, and the total affected population has reached 45.6 million. Public facilities including schools, hospitals, and roads were severely damaged, particularly in the following eight counties or cities: Wenchuan, Lixian, Beichuan, Maoxian, Dujiangyan and Mianzhu in Sichuang Province, Longnan City in Gansu Province as well as Hanzhong City in Shaanxi Province. Continuous aftershocks and geologic change have been threatening the security of the survivors, aid workers and volunteers.

An ACT Preliminary Appeal was issued within 24 hours of the disaster to mobilize and coordinate support to their response. This is an elaborated and revised version of the appeal following further assessment of current needs on the ground.
